Athene Roberts and Tim Ashton (3 Daft Monkeys)
THE DRIVING force behind internationally-renowned quirky festival folk band 3 Daft Monkeys play The Cove Cafe Bar on Friday, July 3.
Fresh from Glastonbury, founding members Athene Roberts (violin, vocals) and Tim Ashton (guitar, vocals) head to Hope Cove as a duo -performing acoustic versions of their original songs, including some rarely heard on the road, along with traditional tunes from around the world, gathered on their busking travels.
They have enjoyed success both in the UK and mainland Europe playing major festivals and headlining venues, and have achieved a deserved reputation of an exhilarating and energetic live performance.
The Cornwall-based couple met in Europe, performing as travelling musicians, and spent their early musical years together busking the streets by day, and learning tunes from other street entertainers from around the world during colourful night-time sessions in bars and around camp fires.
It’s this eclectic mix of tunes and styles that they bring to their more personal and acoustic shows as a duo.
Their music is energetic yet thought provoking, drawing influences from traditional European and Eastern folk music and folklore to modern social comment, and has a passion and joy that is infectious.
Since the birth of their son Arlo in 2012, Tim and Athene have maintained a busy touring schedule with 3 Daft Monkeys, but have decided to also branch out as a duo to explore their musical roots.
With over ten highly-acclaimed studio albums under their belts, Athene and Tim have written many songs and tunes that may not usually be played in the high-energy 3 Daft Monkeys set
This is an opportunity to share some of their more heartfelt and unusual song styles with an intimate audience.
Athene and Tim’s music has been used on BBC TV documentaries , Films and on Sky Sports Channel as well as being used for live Theatre and Circus shows. Athene will be appearing in the forthcoming Pinewood Studios blockbuster movie “Tulip Fever”, and has recorded as a session musician on numerous albums for bands, orchestras and theatre.
The couple, along with the rest of their band, have been invited to play ‘live’ sets on both the Bob Harris BBC Radio 2 show, and more recently on Mark Radcliffe’s BBC Radio 2 Folk Show.
